Ride4Rhinos Proposed Route 2014

This year the start moves to the Karkloof and takes a scenic route through farm lands to the base of hills at Rockwood.

After a steep climb on plantation roads it emerges onto a grassland plateau. Now the climb becomes very testing!

Relax, enjoy the view and be prepared for an hour of hard climbing, a lot of which will be done on foot. The path runs through spectacular natural bush, which we are privileged to be allowed to use.

Get your cameras out as you emerge into the verdant grassland and wetlands of the Karkloof Nature reserve. The Breeding ground of Wattled cranes and Oribi.

Please walk down the donga that lines you up with David Vermaak’s house, then follow the district road that will take you to the tar road and along to Craigieburn dam (distance thirty kilometers).

At the dam is a compulsory breakfast stop where you are expected to spend at least fifteen minutes taking a break.

The road then descends on what was once the original Voortrekker road from Pietermaritzburg to the Transvaal. This  is now a stony track on which even 4x4 vehicles will struggle.  In some places riders will be advised to get off and push.(The bad part is only for about a kilometer).

You will emerge from the bush onto a district road that will take you straight to the Mooi River bridge at Middlerus and you are now half way.

The provincial road to Weenen is in good condition, and the vegetation is looking stunning. The route from Weenen to the Park will be decided later.

70 km

For those of you who would like to do a shorter ride we recommend that you enter the ride as advertised but start at Craigieburn dam at 09h30. This will be considered an official start to the ride, please make sure your name is recorded before starting.

For those who only want to do the short ride from Craigieburn to the Mooi river falls (15 km's) please contact Peter Goble directly to arrange this.

15 km
